B76 - Land use impacts of microbial communities in coastal West Viginia Lake
Mentor: Matthew Saxton, Ph.D.
Microorganisms impact nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and water quality. Land use changes impact microbial community structure. The runoff from areas of high land use tend to carry high levels of pollutants and soil microbes. These conditions are favorable for eutrophication which can lead to harmful algal blooms.
