Trio of economics professors notified of research grant

Farmer School of Business professors , , and  have been notified of funding of their project "Collaborative Research: Introductory Course Material to Increase Participation in College Majors: A Randomized Curriculum Intervention in Economics" from the National Science Foundation’s program. The project aims to reshape introductory economics courses by emphasizing social context and relating economics to students' lives. Furthermore, the project intends to examine how exposure to relatable content affects students' perceptions of economics and future academic and career choices, paying close attention to heterogeneous effects across population subgroups. The work is in partnership with Bruce Weinberg and Aiday Sikhova.

ߣߣÊÓƵ students contribute to research on math interventions with faculty support

Students Julianne Locke and Alyssa Fesenmyer from the school psychology program contributed to a publication on fraction learning interventions for sixth graders with math difficulties. They completed the intervention and helped write portions of the article during a demanding period of their program and internship. The research was co-authored with Sarah Watt, associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology. The article appears in Learning Disabilities Research & Practice.

Paper by 3 FSB students, professor named best student paper at MWAIS conference

A research paper that grew out of a class project was named the best student paper at the recent Midwest Association of Information Systems (MWAIS) conference.

The paper, "IT Governance Framework for the Internet of Medical Things in the Healthcare Industry," by , , , and mentor Dr. Jeffrey Merhout, "analyzes the risks of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) systems and develops an IT governance framework corresponding to these risks."

The paper was the result of a class project in a spring 2024 ISA 305 class, the second year in a row that a student or team took their project and converted it into a conference publication.

Sumerauer graduated in 2025 with a degree in supply chain management and operations, while Sundquist and Roemer earned cybersecurity management degrees in 2025.

Sabnis and McAllister co-author article in NASP's Communiqué

EDP Associate Professor Sujay Sabnis and second-year school psychology graduate student PJ McAllister were co-authors on an article published in Communiqué, the official magazine of the National Association of School Psychologists.

The article, titled “Supporting Trans and Nonbinary Students and Staff,” explores key terminology, provides historical context, outlines current policy, and offers practical strategies for supporting trans and nonbinary individuals in school settings.

Dillon receives national research award to explore AI use in schools

Cara Dillon, assistant professor of school psychology in ߣߣÊÓƵ’s Department of Educational Psychology, has received a $13,217 Early Career Research Award from the Society for the Study of School Psychology. Her project, “Piloting Artificial Intelligence as an Intervention Fidelity Measurement Tool,” will explore how school psychologists and administrators perceive and use AI to collect intervention fidelity data in schools.

Smith co-authors study on effects of simulated hyper-gravity on walking biomechanics

ߣߣÊÓƵ faculty awarded NIH grant to study cardiovascular recovery after inactivity

Kevin Ballard, associate professor of kinesiology, nutrition, and health at ߣߣÊÓƵ University, will lead a new $422,894 research grant funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Faculty colleagues Kyle Timmerman, associate professor and interim department chair, and Paul Reidy, assistant professor, will join Ballard on the project, which examines how cardiorespiratory fitness and adiposity affect recovery of glucose and vascular function following periods of physical inactivity. Reidy played a key role in shaping the proposal.

Paluch publishes work in Journal of Molecular Liquids

Andrew Paluch, associate professor in the Department of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering, has just published in the Journal of Molecular Liquids: “.” The publication is the result of the MS thesis work of Lucas Kwiyukwa at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) which he co-supervised. In this work, Paluch and his co-authors use molecular simulation to investigate the solvation structure/mechanism and relative solubility of amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside with anticancer and pain-relief properties, in a range of pure solvents. The manuscript is published open access, and is free to all. This research was made possible with computational support from the Ohio Supercomputer Center which graciously provided computational resources. The OnDemand platform has allowed students in Tanzania to access and use HPC resources via a web browser.

Katie Johnson, professor of English, recently received a Getty Research Grant to support research on a new book project tentatively entitled “From Coast to Coast: Racing Transatlantic Performance.” Based in Los Angeles, Getty is a “leading global arts organization committed to exhibiting, conserving, and understanding the world’s artistic and cultural heritage.”

Moore earns funding for two projects

Richard Moore, associate professor of Biology, received $19,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a project entitled "Untangling the Taxonomic Relationships Between Two Petitioned Pitcher Plants in the Sarracenia Rubra Species Complex, Sarracenia Rubra ssp. Gulfensis and Sarracenia Rubra ssp. wherryi." Moore also received $21,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a project entitled "Field Surveys and Analyses of Population Differences for In- and ex-situ Conservation of Federally Endangered Harper's Beauty (Harperocallis flava)."

Robert Applebaum, director of the Ohio Long-Term Care Research Project and senior research scholar, and Ian Matthew Nelson, research scholar, in the Scripps Gerontology Center, received $178,090 from Ohio State University, pass-through funds from the Ohio Department of Medicaid, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and the American Rescue Plan Act, for a project entitled "Survey of Home Care Agencies in Ohio."

In just four years, ߣߣÊÓƵ University’s initiative has evolved from a back-of-the-napkin idea into an expanding program focused on studying the relationship between faith and entrepreneurship through rigorous academic research, a course taught in the Farmer School of Business, a student organization, and an international research conference.

The initial work has been so impressive that an anonymous donor is providing a $3 million gift to increase L.I.F.E.’s funding, from initial seed money to a substantial endowment approaching $5 million.
